The Volunteer Team Dedicated to Finding the Missing

At Specialist Search Dogs, we are a dedicated team of volunteers committed to providing expert search and rescue (SAR) support across the UK. While we are a Scottish-based charity, our work extends far beyond, and we are actively expanding our operations. Our mission is to assist in the search for missing persons, using highly trained search dogs, specialist search technicians, and advanced technology to enhance our effectiveness.

However, our work doesn’t stop at search and rescue—we also provide therapy dog support, offering comfort and emotional well-being to both our team members and the wider community.

The Canine Disciplines in Search and Rescue

Our dogs are at the heart of our search efforts, with each one trained in a specialist discipline to ensure we can respond effectively to different types of search scenarios.

1. Tracking and Trailing

Tracking and trailing dogs follow a specific human scent from a known starting point, such as a last known location or an item of clothing. Working on-lead, they navigate forests, urban areas, and open landscapes to help establish a missing person’s direction of travel.

2. Air Scenting

Air scenting dogs locate human scent carried by the wind. Unlike tracking dogs, they do not require a scent article and instead search large areas off-lead, making them highly effective in locating missing individuals who may be unconscious, hidden, or disoriented in difficult terrain.

3. Human Remains Detection (HRD) – Land and Water

HRD dogs, also known as cadaver dogs, are trained to detect human remains at various stages of decomposition. Their work is crucial in search and recovery operations, providing closure to families and supporting law enforcement. Some HRD dogs, like trainee Lottie, are also being trained for water searches, detecting scent rising from beneath the surface of lakes, rivers, and reservoirs.

Beyond the Dogs: The People Who Keep the Team Running

While our dogs are the most visible part of our team, they are only one piece of the puzzle. A successful search operation relies on a dedicated group of volunteers who provide critical support, both in the field and behind the scenes.

Search Technicians: The Lifeline for Handlers and Dogs

Our search technicians are vital to every deployment. These non-dog handlers provide:

🔹 Navigation and logistics support, ensuring search areas are covered efficiently
🔹 Communications management, coordinating with search teams and emergency services
🔹 Welfare support, assisting handlers and dogs in tough conditions
🔹 Medical and safety equipment handling, providing first aid if needed
🔹 Perimeter setup and coordination with external agencies

Without our search technicians, our dogs and handlers would be significantly less effective in the field.

The Essential Backroom Team

It’s easy to focus on the operational side of search and rescue, but none of it would be possible without our incredible backroom team.

💻 Admin & Coordination – Handling callouts, organising training, and managing team logistics.
🎗 Fundraisers & Public Outreach – Raising vital funds to keep the team operational and securing donations.
📞 Call Handlers & Operations Staff – Managing callouts, coordinating responses, and ensuring our team is ready to deploy at a moment’s notice.
⚙️ Equipment & Logistics Managers – Maintaining specialist search equipment and ensuring handlers and search technicians have everything they need.

Every single person involved in Specialist Search Dogs plays a crucial role in keeping our team ready and operational.

Therapy Dogs: Supporting Mental Well-Being

In addition to our search dogs, we are proud to have therapy dogs on our team. These dogs provide vital emotional support, not only for our own team members but also for members of the public.

🐾 For our team – Search and rescue work can be mentally and emotionally challenging. Our therapy dogs are available to help team members decompress after difficult searches, offering comfort and companionship.

🏥 For the public – Our therapy dogs also visit care homes, hospitals, and community centres, providing emotional support to those in need. Whether it’s bringing comfort to residents in a care home or offering support to families affected by missing person cases, our therapy dogs play a crucial role in promoting mental well-being.

Drones, ROVs, and Cutting-Edge Search Technology

While our dogs and people are at the core of our operations, we also utilise advanced technology to enhance our search capabilities.

🚁 Drones – Equipped with thermal imaging and high-resolution cameras, our drones provide aerial surveillance, helping us cover vast areas quickly and detect missing persons in challenging conditions.
🌊 Underwater ROVs – Our remotely operated vehicles assist in water searches, scanning beneath the surface to detect objects of interest and directing HRD dogs and divers to specific locations.

By integrating this technology into our search strategies, we increase efficiency and effectiveness, ensuring that no stone is left unturned in our efforts to find the missing.

A Self-Funded, 24/7 Volunteer Team

One of the most incredible aspects of Specialist Search Dogs is that every single member of the team is a volunteer.

🕰 On call 24/7 – Our team is always ready, often responding at a moment’s notice, regardless of time or weather conditions.
💰 Self-funded – Our handlers, search technicians, and support staff all personally invest in their training and equipment, covering their own travel, fuel, and operational costs.

While the charity provides essential specialist equipment, such as PPE, boats, and ROVs, the reality is that we rely on donations to keep our team running.

How You Can Support Us

As a charity, we depend on public support to continue our vital work. Every donation—whether financial or in the form of equipment—directly impacts our ability to save lives.

💷 Financial contributions help fund:
✅ Specialist training for dogs, handlers, and search technicians
✅ Maintenance and expansion of equipment such as drones, boats, and ROVs
✅ Operational costs, including fuel, protective gear, and essential supplies

🎁 Equipment donations provide:
🎒 High-quality PPE for our volunteers
📡 Communication and navigation tools for search technicians
🛶 Specialist water search equipment, including sonar and thermal imaging technology

Without the generosity of supporters, our team simply wouldn’t exist. Every contribution helps us find the missing faster, support their families, and ultimately, bring loved ones home.
