ScentWork is the easier of the Nosework disciplines to train.
Once the dog knows the odour it is searching for, it can be done anywhere and, in any conditions, but, be warned its addictive!
ScentWork
Have you ever seen a sniffer dog at the airport? What they are doing is advanced scent work. With the methods used in our introduction to ScentWork class we can teach your ordinary pet dog to sniff out a substance or an object. This is a great fun activity for both the dog and owner. Dogs absolutely love using their noses (as you probably know from the enormous amount of time they can spend at one lamppost!).
Scent work is great for calming high energy dogs. Half an hour of ScentWork is as tiring for a dog as a two-hour walk.
Scent work is a great way to bond with your dog, you will learn about their body language, so that you can interpret when they have found a scent. You will learn how to get your dog to indicate where the scent is. Dogs love the game of “find it”. Dogs love having a job, using their noses and pleasing their owners and getting treats or to play with their favourite toy. ScentWork provides all of these. We use positive only training for our ScentWork.
We have a custom-built scent work area within our premises. However, you don’t need anything fancy to practise at home. During your first session you will be given a scent kit which gives you all the tools you need to play this fun rewarding game at home once you have learnt the basics with us.
As with all new sports you introduce your dog to there is a chance your dog won’t take to it. However, they will have fun getting treats and experiencing different smells. So, we can’t promise your dog will be a natural at this but, we always try to make it fun for dogs and humans.
We also offer one to one ScentWork classes where it is just you, your dog and the trainer. Please get in touch to arrange these as they may not be on the booking system. You can also join our 4-week basic ScentWork class, this is to progress your dog after the initial introductory session, during this we work on practising indication (the dog showing us where the scent is) and more complex finds. As with all our training, if we feel that this activity is not in your dog’s best interest, or they are at all distressed/stressed we will stop the training at our discretion immediately. The trainer’s decision is final.

Introduction to ScentWork
We teach you the basics of ScentWork, ensuring you have a strong understanding of the sport, and the benefits it has for your dog. We show you how to imprint/condition your dog onto an odour, and some basic searches. We also give you a Scent Kit to take away to practice with.
1-2-1 ScentWork
This is for anyone who has completed an intro to ScentWork with us and wants to go to the next phase of training. This could be to work on something specific with their dog, for example search endurance, indication. This is ideal for someone who is not comfortable for whatever reason in a group workshop setting. These can be arranged by contacting us directly. The cost of this taking place within our catchment area will be £75 for a 1.5-hour session.
Snifftatic Club
Snifftastic club, is a membership club for ScentWork dogs that have done an introduction to ScentWork workshop. To join the club your dog must be imprinted on an odour. You must demonstrate a willingness to learn and adhere to our code of conduct.
We have fortnightly meets on Wednesday evenings, using our purpose built scent area at our unit, in Glenrothes as well lots of our outside training venues. We cover everything ScentWork related, from scent theory to advanced searches (single room to whole buildings, cars, planes, trains and boats!)
